CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUNDUP W/E 5th FEBRUARY 2011

Carlsberg West Cheshire League leaders Maghull retained their unbeaten home record thanks to their narrow 3-2 defeat of Southport Trinity. Ben Sumner, Lee Tynan and Mark Gregory were on target for the hosts in a close encounter that saw Callum Kelly and Phil Frankland reply for Trinity. West Kirby’s excellent 100% away record was maintained as a result of a 2-0 success at Vauxhall Motors Reserves. Win number 9 on the road was chalked up courtesy of strikes by Dave Forbes and Paul Casey. Goals from Adam Hunter and Willis Buckley kept Helsby on the fringe of the title race as they triumphed 2-1 at Ellesmere Port who had Peter McNulty responding. Willaston and Upton AA played out an open encounter with the Chester outfit in particular spurning a number of opportunities before Simon Andrews gave them an interval lead via the penalty spot. In the games later stages it was the turn of the hosts to misfire in front of goal and they were punished 3 minutes before the end when substitute Steve Finlay netted following good work by Andrews. Josh Roberts lodged an injury time consolation for Willaston. A Jamie Rogers double plus strikes by Lennox Beddows and Derek Rogers eased Christleton to a 4-0 success at struggling neighbours Blacon YC while Ben Bennett and Kieron Fleetwood were the men on the mark as Newton won 2-1 on their 1st ever visit to Marshalls [Phil Davies].
New Brighton’s hopes of promotion from Division 2 suffered as they went down to a surprise 4-3 reversal at Hale. Nev Picton, Paul Hart, James Ormister and Ryan Cullen did the damage for Hale with Paul Howell, Jay Clare and Tom Rowland posting for New Brighton. Leaders Chester Nomads enjoyed a 4-1 away day success at Prescot Cable Reserves [Sam Gifford] where Andy Simmons bagged a brace and Kieron Smith and Martin Gaulton also found the net. Veteran defender Dave Huyton was on the score sheet along with Dave Rudge as 2nd placed Ashville overcame a tough test when winning 2-0 at Richmond Raith Rovers and Mossley Hill Athletic moved into 3rd spot after a Simon Ellison double spearheaded their 2-1 defeat of visiting Capenhurst Villa [Graeme Davidson]. Another 2 goal man was Ian Hobday who helped West Kirby Reserves to a 3-1 victory over Bronze Social.
The Manager of the Month curse struck Howard Rubbery as his Merseyside Police outfit went down to a 4-1 defeat at 3rd Division table toppers Manor Athletic. Chris Tolley led the way for Manor with a superb hat trick and he was backed up by Sean Murphy as Daley Woods netted for the Police. Marshalls Reserves [Anthony Reilly,2, Gary Powell, Joe Connolly] lie 3rd thanks to their 4-1 win at Christleton Reserves [Danny Hughes]. On an encouraging day for the club basement boys Hale Reserves [Alan Carlson,2, Chris Smith, Tony McKinley] defeated fellow strugglers Beb Athletic Reserves [Danny Nevin, Matty Gill] 4-2 and Capenhurst Villa Reserves [Scott Fogg, Robbie Stockton, Luke Eccles, own goal] registered the same scoreline in an unlikely win at New Brighton Reserves [Rob Boyd, Mike McGrath].
Youth Division leaders Maghull had Mike Cummins as a hat trick star as they eclipsed Ellesmere Port 6-1 but 2nd placed Belfry [Darren Pinnington, Ryan Fossard, Danny Hart, Jordan Colton] were on the wrong end of a 6-4 scoreline at Helsby [Alex Hale, Danny Warren, Joe Robinson, Mike Whitehead, Owen Rowlands, Paul Huyton]. Halewood Town [Andy Bird, Sam Sullivan, Louis Ruddock] stayed well in contention after a narrow 3-2 home success over Runcorn Town [Gareth Hewitt, 2].
